Depends on whom you ask and where you ask. If you are in Italy, a panino is just a sandwich that is often made of salami, ham, cheese, mortadella. If you are in the United States, it refers to panini sandwich that was grilled on each side.

You make a sandwich, then grill on each side by an oven or a panini press.

If I want to buy a panini grill what should I check out for?

No, they're the same thing you'll probably get the best deal by looking for an electric grill as opposed to buying one strictly marketed towards panini creating.
